Total fundraised:
Sea Turtles
- São Tomé e Principe
Programa Tatô is a sea turtle conservation project located on the island of São Tomé, West Africa. With the community at the heart of their efforts, the team consists of 90% local nationals. They monitor and patrol the coastline and beaches to ensure that up to five different species of sea turtles can safely lay their eggs. Additionally, the project provides alternative livelihoods for people who previously depended on the turtle trade.
List of donors:
Sharks and Rays
- Malaysia
SharkCam is working to reduce bycatch (the accidental capture of non-targeted species) of several shark and ray species in Malaysia’s commercial fisheries. They utilize low-cost, home-built time-lapse cameras to monitor when and where bycatch occurs. In collaboration with the government, they aim to regulate fishing practices to minimize bycatch without negatively impacting the local communities that rely on fishing for their livelihoods.
List of donors:
Sea Birds
- La Réunion
Les Pétrels, based on La Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean, protects thousands of endangered petrel seabirds that would otherwise perish without their intervention. Young seabirds, upon leaving their burrows, seek the moon to guide them to the ocean. However, city light pollution misleads them, causing them to fall to the ground. Once grounded, petrels cannot fly back to the sea on their own, making them vulnerable to predators and unable to find food.
List of donors:
Whale Sharks
- Galapagos Island
The Galapagos Whale Shark Project is the leading research group studying these endangered sharks in the Galapagos archipelago. The project employs underwater ultrasounds to investigate the unusually high proportion of female whale sharks in the area. This research aims to determine if they might be pregnant, enabling the team to advocate for more effective conservation measures.
List of donors:
Humpback Dolphins
- South Africa
SWORD is a project near Cape Town, South Africa which explores new methods for monitoring the endangered Indian Ocean humpback dolphin population. They record signature whistles, unique sounds produced by dolphins (akin to names in humans), using 24/7 underwater microphones. This innovative, climate-friendly, and cost-effective approach helps establish protective regulations for these marine mammals.
List of donors:
Corals
- Colombia
CoralConnect is working to restore corals severely damaged by destructive fishing techniques in Barú, Colombia. They train community members to become coral gardeners, transplanting coral fragments from nurseries into permanent structures in protected areas. This initiative provides locals with opportunities to work and learn about their natural heritage.
List of donors:
Marine Mammals
- Cambodia
Fishery production structures deployed by the team prevent bottom trawlers from fishing in protected areas. The Cambodian Marine Mammal Conservation Project has been monitoring the recovery of key species such as Irrawaddy dolphins and dugongs while collaborating with fishermen to establish alternative livelihoods through ecotourism.
List of donors:
Monk Seals
- Turkey
The Mediterranean Monk Seal Project is dedicated to protecting the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal, the only seal species native to the Mediterranean Sea. Through targeted outreach activities and cave monitoring studies, the team aims to preserve the Turkish coastline as a safe haven for these seals.
List of donors:
Mangroves
- Haiti
PlanBee for Mangroves works to protect and restore mangroves in Haiti. The project seeks to reduce unsustainable harvesting by establishing apiculture (honey production) businesses, providing local communities with alternative income sources while restoring harvested areas through seedling planting and a plastic-free approach.
List of donors:
Seahorses
- Lisbon
The Tagus Seahorses project aims to understand and protect a recently uncovered, data-deficient population of seahorses in the Tagus estuary through comprehensive scientific studies and community outreach programs.
